How Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery Works?

Known as the “Gold Standard” in bariatrics, gastric bypass surgery works using two techniques to achieve weight loss. These two techniques are a powerful combination that only the severly obese will have be qualified for.

Gastric bypass uses the restrictive technique to reduce the capacity of the stomach. Using a new, smaller stomach, called the stoma, patients will feel fuller soon and eat less. This technique is similar to gastric sleeve and lap-band surgery.

Gastric bypass second technique, malabsorptive, is when the a large portion of the intestines are “bypassed” allowing a significant portion of nutrients not to be absorbed.  Allowing food to pass right through your digestive system without adding to caloric intake.

Types of Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric bypass, Roux en-Y (proximal) – This is the standard procedure that typically is being performed. The Y-connection is connected near the upper part  (proximal) of the gastrointestinal tract.

Gastric bypass, Roux en-Y (distal) – The Y-connection is connected further down the tract (distal), allowing less nutrients to be absorbed. This furthers the weight loss of the patient.

Mini-Gastric Bypass Surgery – This is a simpler alternative to traditional gastric bypass procedure. Mini-gastric bypass involves a long, narrow stomach that connects to the digestive tract. This is a minimal invasive and less complex procedure.

Obesity is defined as the condition of being very overweight and having a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher. The BMI is a measure of your weight relative to your height.

Your waist size is also important. It is a measure of your abdominal fat. Your health risks increase as your BMI and waist size get larger. A waist measurement greater than 40 inches for men or 35 inches for women indicates a significant increase in health risk.
